With Kathy Milici

Let's Create Some Fancy Flourishing!

with Kathy Milici

Ornamental Decorative Flourishing is one of the most challenging and rewarding skills that a calligrapher can acquire; but did you ever wonder how it’s successfully done?

Please note: This is a design class, not a letterforms class. Basic knowledge of any pointed pen script style (modern or classic) is necessary to fully benefit from this workshop

How we'll get fancy in this 2-day Zoom workshop:

Ornamental Decorative Flourishing is one of the most challenging and rewarding skills that a calligrapher can acquire; but did you ever wonder how it’s successfully done?

In this class, we’ll combine both history and artistry as we explore the world of flourished names. First, students will learn the fundamental techniques of flourishing, with their signature graceful curves, concentric ovals, and gentle direction changes. In this step-by-step, guided tutorial, we will experiment with the endless possibilities of flourished extensions and attachments using pencil sketches. We’ll play with proper names and words until we feel comfortable, then start designing our own!

As a final project, you will create a beautifully rendered pen and ink composition! Both decorative and useful, our goal in flourishing names and words is to achieve a balanced, harmonious and visually beautiful look, while maintaining the overall integrity and readability of the letterforms.

You will also learn the meaning behind little-known flourishing phrases that have been practiced throughout history, along with insights and tricks/tips from “the mind of Milici.”

Class recordings will be available to view until October 21, 2024.
